Persuasive Essays
Persuasive writing can be defined as a creative essay designed to
convince the reader that his/her point of view is right. The topic
chosen must have more than one side to the issue. Research the topic
producing evidence for position taken. An introductory paragraph
should state the thesis of the paper. The body of the paper needs at
least three or more main points. Provide evidence of the main points
with statistics, quotes, and examples. The last step is the
conclusion that wraps up the paper restating the thesis.
Sample Paragraph of a Persuasive Essay:
Approximately one million teenage women have babies each year (Teen
2004). Babies born to teenage girls will have a difficult time in
life including school failure, poverty, and possible physical or
mental health problems. While the idea of being pregnant and having a
baby to love sounds great, the truth is a baby born to an unwed
teenage mother may have problems from the day it is born throughout
the baby’s lifetime (thesis). “Babies born to teenagers are at risk
for neglect and abuse because their young mothers are uncertain about
their roles and may be frustrated by the constant demands of
caretaking” (AACAP Facts 2004). Many teenagers argue they will love
their babies and believe they will be able to take care of the baby
(Opposite side of the argument is teenage women believe they can
provide adequate care for the child). However, once the teenager has
a baby the problems begin. A teenager will find she is no longer able
to spend a lot of time with her friends or she finds herself not
giving time or attention with the baby. This often leads to a baby
developing behavioral or mental health problems as a child and these
may continue as adult. The baby may have physical health problems if
the mother does not receive adequate care during her pregnancy. Often
the unwed mother does not have a job to support the baby or she finds
she must find daycare for the baby that is expensive. Thus, the child
grows up in poverty and may become a teenage mother who has a baby.
The cycle continues. Teenage pregnancy is wrong because the child
born may have mental or physical health problems due to living in
poverty and these problems may continue as an adult.
This sample paragraph of a persuasive essay begins with a statistics
showing how many teenage girls are having babies. The next step she
takes is the thesis statement about babies born to teenage mothers.
She briefly gives evidence about the babies born to teenagers. She
states the opposite side of the issue that many teenagers believe they
are able to adequately care for a baby. The last step is repeating
the thesis statement with focus on her opinion showing babies born to
teenagers often have problems.
